A Guide To Successful Invisalign® Treatment

A Guide To Successful Invisalign® Treatment from SmileWell Family Dentistry in Torrance, CAMany looking to straighten their smile are drawn to Invisalign® clear aligners because they see them as a discrete alternative to braces. While they are a convenient and effective alternative, how well they work depends on the user. Getting the results you want from Invisalign requires following some important directions. Here is an overview of Invisalign's benefits and how you can maximize your treatment.

About Invisalign

Invisalign is a treatment that employs a series of custom-made, clear aligner trays that slowly move teeth into a desired position. Unlike braces, which are often metal, obvious, and cannot be removed by anyone but a dental professional, Invisalign aligners are clear, discreet, and can be removed for short periods. These benefits make them attractive for those looking for a flexible and less noticeable teeth straightening option. However, for Invisalign to have the desired impact, patients should follow these key pieces of advice.

Choose an experienced and knowledgeable provider

Those interested in this treatment should find a provider with extensive experience using Invisalign. Find a provider who has treated a wider range of cases with Invisalign. During the consultation, patients should ask questions about the practitioner's experience treating their particular issue.

A good way to narrow down a list of Invisalign providers is to talk to friends and family and do online research. A friend or family member who has had Invisalign treatment is ideal. However, searching online for local providers is also helpful. Patients can even read reviews online.

Wear aligners for the recommended time

Invisalign clear aligners are removable, which makes dental hygiene easier and allows the patient to take the aligners out for short periods. However, patients must wear their aligners for at least 22 hours daily to be effective. Keeping the aligners out for extended periods can impact treatment and increase treatment times. Therefore, we recommend that patients remove their aligners as little as possible. Also, when active treatment concludes, patients must wear the retainer as recommended so teeth can settle into their new position.

Commit to good oral hygiene

As with braces, treatment with Invisalign requires patients to be disciplined about oral hygiene. There is an elevated risk for cavities during treatment, so brushing twice daily and flossing at least once becomes more crucial. Bruising after eating and washing the mouth out with water is also recommended. In addition to practicing at-home oral healthcare, patients should see the dentist every four to six weeks for cleanings and evaluations.

Take care of your aligners

Two nightly cleaning routines are recommended for keeping Invisalign trays in optimal condition. The first involves brushing the trays with a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle clear soap. After bruising the trays, rinse them thoroughly before placing them back in the mouth. Invisalign also sells a "Steralinger" cleaning product (a combination of rubbing alcohol and sodium bicarbonate) with a tray for soaking. They recommend placing the aligners in the tray, soaking them in the solution for 3 minutes, and rinsing the trays off afterward. Invisalign trays should be kept in their cases when not in use to avoid damage or loss.
