General Dentist: Reasons to Choose Dental Implants

Many general dentists recommend dental implants for teeth replacement. This is due to the various benefits of implants that other teeth replacement solutions such as dentures and fixed bridges cannot provide. The following is a review of the reasons general dentists recommend dental implants.

The advantages of choosing dental implants

When deciding the best way to replace missing teeth, you should consider your own goals for treatment. Patients who do not mind a more invasive and longer treatment process and want new replacement teeth that look, feel and function like their natural teeth once did, then dental implants are worth considering.

Preserves bone density

Bone loss is common after tooth loss. This is because the bone no longer needs to support teeth. Dentures and fixed bridges do not preserve bone density in the jaw. However, dental implants can prevent bone loss from happening as the titanium implant fuses together with the natural bone inside the jaw (osseointegration). If the patient has already experienced bone loss, the general dentist will include a bone grafting procedure as a part of the dental implants process, whereas traditional dentures and fixed bridges do not require a bone grafting procedure and additional bone loss may continue to occur.

Improved comfort

Many patients report dental implants offering more comfort than dentures. This is because dental implants work in the same way as a natural tooth. The replacement tooth is supported by the implant, which is permanently fixed into the jawbone. On the other hand, traditional dentures are removable, and they are only supported by the gums. Often, dentures lead to soreness or could become loose or fall out, which is not a concern for patients who choose dental implants.

Fewer food limitations

As discussed, dental implants are much more durable than traditional dentures. With dental implants, you can eat as you would with normal teeth. This includes meats, corn on the cobb, apples and much more. Without taking action to replace missing teeth, many foods are off-limits, and some with severe teeth loss are only able to eat soft foods. Dentures offer a way to eat more foods, but they may also have certain dietary restrictions as well. It is also easier to care for dental implants as they are not removable, and you can simply brush, floss and use mouthwash as you would with natural teeth.

Long-term durability

Dental implants can last for more than twenty years if they are cared for properly with a good oral care routine and reducing the consumption of foods that are high in sugar and other carbohydrates that increase the risk of periodontal concerns. You can also get the most out of your dental implants by treating bruxism if it exists and wearing a mouthguard during physical activity.
